The Bogor Botanical Gardens

The famous public gardens is the Bogor Botanical Gardens. It lies 60 kilometres south of Jakarta. It was built at the order of the British Governor Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, but the Dutch Governor Van Der Cappellen opened it in 1817.

The large park covers an area of 87 hectares and has more than 15.000 kinds of trees and plants. There are 400 different types of palms, more than 5.000 kinds of orchids from Indonesia and abroad, and the giant Rafflesia which blooms only once a year. During the 19th century, this garden was famous for the study of tea, cassava, tobacco, cinchona, and other plants. There is also botanical library where students can find a lot of books on botany. In 1856, at the north part of the Garden the Dutch built a palace for their governors-general. It open daily from 09.00 to 17.00 for visitors.

Three branches of the Bogor Botanical Gardens are the Cibodas Botanical Gardens, the Purwodadi  Botanical Gardens, and the Eka Karya Botanical Gardens. The Cibodas Botanical Gardens was built in 1826 for study of the flora and fauna on the mountain. It covers an area of about 80 hectares on the slope of Gede volcano, 1200 metres above sea level. The purwodadi Botanical Gardens was built on the lower slope of Mt. Arjuna, East Java in 1914. It is about 3000 metres above sea level. It covers an area of 85 hectares. Here people study plants of dry area. The Eka Karya Botanical Gardens was built in 1959 for the study of the flora on the mountains in West Nusa Tenggara. It covers an area of 50 hectares on the slope of Mt. Pohen in Bai. It is between 1250 and 1450 metres above sea level.
The Olimpic Games

The ancient Greeks said that sport was good exercises for the body. They also said that sport would help develop mind and character. Thus, they thought that sport was as necessary as sciences. During 19th century Europeans and americans began to have the same idea about sport as the ancient greek did. So they agreed to establish sport organization. While schools and universities in this century began to take sport seriously, the workers in town also did the same thing and founded sports organization. At this time the modern rules of many games including football, cricket, hockey, baseball, tennis, and many more were made.

The olimpic games are popular sport events. The olimpic games originally started thousands years ago in ancient greece. The greek held the games every four years as a religious festival in honour of the supreme Greek God Zeus. These games included racing, wrestling, and jumping contents. Then these games died out in AD 394. In 1896 a Frenchman, Baron Piere de Coubertin, started the modern Olimpic Games. He believed that international sports competition would make good will and peace between nations and increase the international relationship.

Barbecue In The Park

Last Sunday, my friend and I went to the park because David’s family invited us to a barbecue party in the park. We lived nearby so we just walked there. When we got to the park, there were not many people. David’s family was already there. They arrived there early to get the best picnic spot with an electronic barbecue grill nearby. When we arrived, they were cleaning the barbecue. After making sure the barbecue was clean, they turned the barbecue on by by pushing the button. The electric stove turned on and the metal plate became hot.

David’s mother put some cooking oil on the metal plate, and after that she put some sausages, beef steaks, and some onions on the barbecue. Meanwhile, David’s father was preparing the bread, butter, and the drinks. While waiting for the meat to cook, David and I joined other boys playing football. When we got tired, we stopped and enjoyed the sausages, steaks, and some cold soft drinks. The food was delicious. I think David’s mother is one of the best cooks in the world.

Fear of Flying

One day I flew from Denpasar to Makassar. I went with Kevin and Kathryn. Kevin is the Project Manager for Kang Guru Radio English and Kathryn is the Program Officer for AusAID. The flight was only about an hour. We started to descend and the landing gear made a loud POP sound. I was a little worried. The pilot said something over the intercom in Bahasa Indonesia. I didn’t understand him. I asked someone sitting near me for a clue. He looked anxiously back at me shaking his head. There was no comfort there. The flight attendants looked scared, too.

Where was Kevin when I needed him? I glanced back at Kathryn. All the color had drained from her face. She was clutching the armrests of her seat and shaking her head with her jaws clenched. Again, the pilot said something in that mysterious language. This time, instead of the POP sound, there was a nice gentle creaking and a slight shudder as the landing gear dropped. I looked out the window and could see the tires on my side of the plane lowering.

I felt a little weak in the knees. I realised I had been holding my breath for quite a while. As I drew in a deep breath, we gave each other a shaky smile as the plane bounced along the landing strip. We had made it ..

CINDERELLA

Once upon a time there was a girl named Cinderella. She lived with her bad step – mother and two step sisters. She had to do all the household chores. One day, the king invited all the ladies in the Kingdom to go to a ball in the palace. He wanted to find the Crown Prince a wife. The step sisters went to the ball that night with their mother. Cinderella was left alone. She cried because she actually wanted to go to the ball, too.

Just then a fairy godmother came. With her magic wand, she gave Cinderella a coach, two horses, and footmen. She also gave Cinderella a lovely dress to wear to the ball and a pair of glass slippers. She told cinderella to come home before midnight.

At the ball, Cinderella danced all night with the Prince. The Prince fall in love with her. At midnight, Cinderella ran home. Unfortunately, one of her glass slippers slipped off at the door. She did not have time to put it back on. The Prince was sad as he could not find Cinderella again that night.

The next day, the Prince and his men brought along the glass slipper. They want all over the kingdom to search for the owner. After searching for a long time, finally, they came to Cinderella’s house. The slipper fit her. The prince was very happy to find Cinderella again. They got married and lived happily ever after.
